My Learning Goal : - By the end of 2021 I will complete the Reading Recovery Course which entails four observation survey assessment training sessions, eighteen inservice sessions and four half hour daily lessons teaching Reading Recovery students. Evidence On Tuesday 30th November I will graduate from the Reading Recovery training Course 2021. This means that I have completed the Observation Survey training, attended eighteen inservice sessions and given individual reading instruction to six students over the course of the year. Unfortunately, due to COVID all but one of our inservice sessions were completed via zoom. It would have been much more valuable if these sessions were face to face with other training teachers, however, the richness of the learning has not been hampered by the delivery mode of the training. I have gained valuable insights into the strategic processes of reading and writing in young children that I will be able to incorporate into my teaching going forward. My Performance Goal : - By the end of 2021 I will have assisted at least eight Year One students in improving their reading level to at least ten levels above their instructional level at the beginning of Year one and their writing vocabulary to consist of at least 50 words written independently. Evidence With the presence of COVID and the extended lockdown and forced learning from home, I was unable to reach the target of working with eight students individually this year - I have been able to reach six students, five of whom have been discontinued from the program at instructional level 18 (at least 10 levels above their initial instructional level at the beginning of the year) and a writing vocabulary of at least 50 words. The sixth child has not received enough quality one on one instruction (due to the lockdown) and so it was decided that he would 'Transfer Program' as he would not reach the discontinuing goals before the end of the year. It was certainly a challenge working with the students remotely, however, I felt that it allowed the parents to be more involved in their child's reading and writing learning journey. The lockdown and subsequent return to work has given me opportunities to work with more Year One students in small group Guided Reading sessions, so although I was unable to reach the goal of eight students having individual instruction, I have actually reached a great deal more students by having the time to do these Guided Reading sessions.
